CITY TOUR IN AREQUIPA

Itinerary

Itinerary

The departure of this tour is available in the morning or afternoon. We pick you up at your hotel to start the tour.

During the city tour we visit the following places:

Main Square, city of Arequipa
Bordered by various arched walkways and the Cathedral, the Main Square possesses a beautiful bronze fountain of three plates crowned by the figure of a sixteenth century soldier. Of this person, who is called “Tuturutu”, the story says he was in charge of warning of any new event. Around the square, you see three granite portals with brick and lime bases: Portal del Cabildo (Portal de la Municipalidad), Portal de las Delicias (Portal de San Agustín), and Portal del Regocijo (Portal de Flores).

Cathedral, city of Arequipa
It is considered one of the first seventeenth century religious monuments of the city. It is built of sillar (white volcanic stone) with a brick base. Destroyed by fire in 1844, it was rebuilt in 1868 by the Arequipa architect Lucas Poblete. He used a Neoclassical style and placed the entrances of church on the flanking naves. In 2001, the building was struck hard by an earthquake, which seriously damaged its towers.

The Church of the Brotherhood of Jesus Christ
This complex, made up of buildings constructed by the Jesuits for religious and living purposes, is a representative monument of the seventeenth century religious architecture (1660). The church itself rises from the center of the buildings. It was designed in 1573 by Gaspar Baez and destroyed by an earthquake in 1584. The current structure dates from 1650. Inside you find sixty-six canvases from the Cusco School from artists as Bernardo Bitti and Diego de la Puente.

CAMPIÑAS TOUR –THE AREQUIPA COUNTRYSIDE

Itinerary

Itinerary

You´ll be picked up directly at your hotel at the designated time and we´ll head towards our first stop, Yanahuara´s Main Plaza and the elaborately carved San Juan Bautista Church. Here the traditional Spanish Colonial architecture is enhanced by a very special building material- ´sillar´, white volcano ash. From the Yanahuara Viewpoint, which was built in the 19th century and whose stone arches are engraved with the words of notable Arequipeños, you´ll see the entire city from a new vantage point, along with Mount Misti volcano. We´ll also be able to appreciate the views from the next looking-point, Carmen Alto, which will introduce to us the Chilina Valley. Although Arequipa, the White City, is known for its beautiful architecture, its countryside is no less idyllic. The city is surrounded by pre-Inca terraces (still in use in the country districts of Paucarpata and Sabandia, which we´ll also be visiting) along the riverside and small picturesque towns with llamas and vicuñas.
At the 400 year old Sabandia Stone Mill, powered by a neighboring waterfall and worth seeing for its stately architecture alone, you´ll have the chance to see the traditional method of grinding grains. We´ll also visit the rural and traditional area of Paucarpata, where we´ll appreciate a striking set of Inca and pre-Inca terraces still in use along which wander alpacas and vicuñas. After visiting Paucarpata´s Plaza we´ll continue onward to the Founder´s Mansion. Built by the city´s founder in the 16th century, it was uniquely remodeled by Mr. Juan Crisóstomo in 1785, and is therefore also known as Goyeneche Palace. At Tingo there´ll be a food court in a tree-lined avenue where you can sample treats from Arequipa, such as buñuelos (Latin doughnut holes) and anticuchos (Peruvian shish-kabob).
From there we´ll ascend the town hill of Sachaca, where we´ll pass the houses stacked up on the slope like stairs. We´ll pass through the Main Square with its centuries-old Roman-inspired church with white bell-house. Our goal is one final lookout from which to learn about Arequipa. From here you´ll see the city in its entirety, the three volcanoes, the countryside, Tiabaya, Goyeneche Palace, and Hunter District.
Our last stop is the Bridge of Iron or Bolívar Bridge, designed by Gustavo Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame in the 19th century. It was shipped over in parts from Europe before beginning its train journey to Arequipa for assembly.

Only about 30% of the Inca remains of Choquequirao have been excavated. What can be seen today however, is most impressive and very much worth the challenging trek to get here. The stonework in Choquequirao is not as sophisticated as that found in Machu Picchu, because the stone found here is very difficult to carve, but the buildings are impressive and suggest a site of high status. Condors can be seen frequently. Accomodation: Camping at Choquequirao.

Day 4: Choquequirao – Santa Rosa

We have a chance to more fully explore the ruins and have a little rest in the morning. In the afternoon we return along the edge of the Apurimac canyon, descending to our tropical campsite at Santa Rosa. (5 hours hiking) Accommodation: Camping at Santa Rosa (2095m / 6873ft) Depending on the progress of the group, the guide may elect to camp at Chiccisqa (1836m / 6023ft).

Day 5: Santa Rosa – Cachora – Cusco

Early in the morning, in order to escape the heat of the canyon of the Apurimac, we descend to the raging river, and then begin an arduous climb that is rewarded with spectacular views. We climb for about four hours, and have lunch in Capuliyoc (2915 metres/ 9561 feet). The final two hours of our hike into the village of Cachora refreshingly flat through pretty farming countryside. Our private car will be waiting to take us back to Cusco (4 hours drive). We will arrive in Cusco between 7and 8pm.

**Optional extra (no extra cost, but must be booked at the time of booking or at the latest during your briefing) About 3 hours from Cusco we will take a small detour to the hot springs of Conoq… a little known hot spring popular with local people. You will pass through local communities and see thatched roof stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas. In the kitchens, you’ll see guinea pigs running loose, ready to be captured and cooked. (We’ll have the opportunity to eat guinea pig for lunch or dinner, if you’re up for it!) HUCHUY QOSQO

This is a fantastic 2 day trek that enables you to hike from Cusco across to the Sacred Valley. Even though it would appear to be in a populated area, you soon discover the true wildness of the Andes. You can do this hike and also visit Machu Picchu, see Old Peak & Small Cusco.

Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Tambo Machay - Pumamarca

We leave Cusco early, and take private transport to the interesting ruins of Tambo Machay. From here we climb steeply upwards until we have spectacular views over Cusco City. We then cross the mountains, pass pretty alpine lakes, and pastures where llamas graze. Campesino farmers also grow potatoes here. We then follow an Inca trail downward to a village of stone huts, with thatched straw on their roofs.

During the day we cross four gentle passes, the highest of which is 4350m. As such, while this is considered an “easy” hike by Andean standards you should still be prepared to climb for quite a few hours upwards. After about 6 hours we arrive at a small hamlet known as Pucamarca, where we will camp for the night.

Day 2: Pumamarca – Huchuy Qosqo - Cusco

After breakfast, we pass through a narrow but spectacular canyon and arrive with wonderful views over the Sacred Valley. After about 2 hours of walking we will arrive at Huchuy Cusco. Here we explore the ruins of Huchuy Cusco and ponder its role as “Small Cusco”. From here it is three and a half hours stunning but steep and slippery descent into the Sacred Valley. We will have a late lunch in the typical and untouristed village of Lamay. From here, our private car will pick us up and return us to Cusco. Then we will stop in Q’enqo (means ‘zigzag’ or ‘labyrinth’) owns the most impressive carved rocks in the Cusco area. There are carvings everywhere, although some are a little indistinct: a llama, a condor and snakes have been identified. There are many zigzag channels on top of the rock, probably used for pouring sacrificial chicha (a local wine made from corn).  After this we will go to Puca Puraca (means Red fortress). This is a small site and although the name suggests that it was a fortress, it does not appear to have any defensive purpose.

And the last place to visit will be Tambomachay  the Temple to the Water. There are aqueducts, canals and cascades carved in stone, designed to channel water flowing from a nearby stream.
